Les gantiers were the manufacturers of gloves in Europe during the 18th century and the grandparents of modern perfumery. To mitigate the smell of leather, les gantiers commonly soaked skins of animals in mixtures of scented oils that made them more pleasing to the delicate hands of ladies and gentlemen accustomed to a life of refined luxury.
