There is an old legend which says that the name "Rosa Mundi" was created after Rosamund Clifford, mistress of Henry II, who reigned 'as sovereign of England between 1154 and 1189. Rosamund Clifford, also known as the Fair Rosamond, or Rose of the World, was long the mistress of King Henry II. Henry was forced to marry the Princess Eleonora, who jealous of her husband's relationship with Rosamund. is said to have killed with poison.
After his death, Henry paid for a grave at Godstow, near Oxford monastery, and made a donation because this was visited by sisters, to whom was asked to bring flowers on the grave of Rosa Mundi on the occasion of their meeting.
