The Diptyque store was founded in Paris, at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain, with three friends driven by the same creative passion.
Christiane Gautrot, interior decorator, Desmond Knox-Leet, painter, and YvesCoueslant, theater director and designer. Initially they designed furnishing fabrics and wallpaper for Liberty and Sanderson, then in 1961 decided to work together to open a shop at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain to show their patterns of tissue.
With their unique taste, they have gradually transformed the shop into a world in itself. A chic bazaar that offered a fascinating variety of unforeseen factors, unique to Paris, that the trio led by his travels.
"Merchants of everything," like Henry Gault and Christian Millau used to call themselves, their choices had no limits except their insatiable curiosity and keen sense of beauty.
In 1963 they began to explore their love for perfumes, initially with candles - Aubepine, Cannelle and The - then launching their first eau de toilette, L’Eau, in 1968. L'Eau was inspired by a pot pourri of the sixteenth century and the scent of a Pomander with cloves, very spicy, without distinction of masculine or feminine gender, based on an unmatched olfactory in the repertoire of traditional perfumery. A dazzling beginning of a repertoire of scents, all bearing the iconic label a black oval.
The enthusiasm for perfumes, love for creation and the sensitivity of each of the three founders have enabled the creation of a unique style. Their creations were born from the memories of travels through the Mediterranean and the Near East, evoke the warmth of a Greek summer, a citrus orchard, the blue skies of a Latin landscape, noon in the countryside, a garden on the banks of a watercourse.
The quality of raw materials, the simplicity of presentation, the style of lettering and design are the distinctive character of Diptyque.
